What is Tarot?

What is Tarot, and What is Divination?

Tarot is a form of divination using a 78 card deck that has two categories of cards, the Major Arcana and the Minor Arcana. Divination is a practice of using different objects (cards, dice, tea leaves, etc.) to communicate with the Divine, God, The Universe, or whatever higher self or being that calls to someone, to seek advice and guidance on real world problems, projects, and situations.

The 78 card Tarot deck is modeled after the RWS deck, but may have different names for some or most of the cards based on the overall theme of each Tarot deck. Tarot readings offer a different perspective, a chance for self reflection, offer guidance and advice, and can read the overall energy of a person or situation.

  • Other forms of Divination include:
  • Tea Leaf Reading
  • Oracle Reading
  • Astrology
  • Scrying
  • Rune Casting

What Tarot Isn’t

There are a ton of misconceptions about Tarot out there, but one of them is that it used to predict the future. Tarot CAN and HAS predicted future events, however, Tarot is more of a tool for reading current energies, situations, dynamics of a relationship, and overall guidance of what someone may be feeling or going through, as well as a differing perspective.

Relying on Tarot to feed into an answer that one wants to hear will not do the client or reader any good. Tarot often has a funny way of telling you EXACTLY what you NEED to hear, and often times, Tarot does not consider your feelings.

How Should We Use Tarot?

I’m not here to tell you how to use your Tarot deck, you may do whatever you wish, however, I do believe that Tarot is best utilized as a form of energy reading and interpretations on situations and relationship dynamics. Interpreting future events isn’t bad, but not always recommended due to things in life that may change the outcome after the prediction is made. Asking a Yes/No question isn’t bad either, but not always recommended due to the fact that Tarot doesn’t have straight “Yes” or “No” cards.

  • Good Questions to Ask Tarot:
  • What is the outlook on this new job opportunity?
  • If I take the leap on this project, what will be the outcome?
  • What information may I be missing from this situation?
  • What do I need to work on to build confidence?
